SVANETI

Svaneti is a large, mountainous region located on the southern slopes of the Caucasus mountain range in the North-west of Georgia and it contains some of the highest peaks of the Caucasus range. This beautiful region has its own language, related to but distinct from Georgian, and it also has its own ancient traditions and crafts.
The stunning countryside in Svaneti makes it an ideal destination for the adventurous and sporty and it is famous for its excellent hiking trails, horse-riding and ski resorts.
Svaneti is a special place for those who wish to learn more about this region’s rich culture and architecture.
The characteristic landscape of Svaneti is small villages dotting the mountain slopes, dominated by 20-25 metre towers, consisting of four or five storeys connected to each other by internal wooden staircases. Many of these towers date from the middle ages and were used primarily as defensive structures and on the highest floor there is usually a platform to attack from during invasions.

Besides Svaneti’s distinctive towers you can find out more about Svaneti’s ancient and rich history by visiting the Historic and Ethnographic Museum in Mestia. This museum which dates back to 1936 includes icons from the Middles Ages as well as artifacts from the noble family, Dadeshkeliani from the Middle Ages. In addition the museum houses a world class collections of religious manuscripts gold and silver jewellery.
