🛡️ Travel Insurance for Visiting Georgia

While travel insurance is not currently mandatory for visa-exempt visitors to enter Georgia, it is strongly recommended for all visitors. Whether you’re exploring the mountains, enjoying Tbilisi’s vibrant culture, or heading to the coast, having insurance ensures peace of mind in case of unexpected issues.

Is Travel Insurance Required?

  • No, most visitors from visa-exempt countries (including those from the UK, EU, US, Canada, and Australia) can enter Georgia without proof of insurance.
  • However, without it, you may be responsible for all medical and emergency expenses out of pocket.

Visitors should also be aware of certain changes regarding the Georgian government’s position on travel insurance requirements for citizens of visa-exempt countries. In 2024 the Georgian government announced that starting 1 June 1 2024 all visa-exempt travellers (totalling about 95 countries) must present travel health insurance covering at least €30,000 for the duration of their stay in Georgia and with a requirement that documents be in Georgian, English, or Russian.  However, the implementation was delayed to 1 January 2026 to give time for coordination and rollout .Despite this, border officials—particularly for non-Western passports—have occasionally asked for proof of insurance even before 2026.

At Travel Eurasia we would therefore strongly recommend, for your own peace of mind and due to the possibility of being asked for proof of insurance by border officials on entry to the country, that visitors take out insurance coverage for at least €30,000 for the duration of their stay in Georgia and carry relevant documentation with their other travel documents in Georgian, English, or Russian.

⚠️ Travel to Breakaway Regions

Most travel insurance policies do not cover visits to:

  • Abkhazia
  • South Ossetia

Always check your policy’s terms if you plan to visit these areas, as they are not under Georgian government control and pose security risks.
